Most of my rolling stock is a mixture of kit built and proprietary items. All wagons and coaches built now have scale wheels and pin point bearings as a matter of course. Similarly, any R-T-R items have their wheels upgraded where this is necessary. All R-T-R items have three link couplings fitted and, where appropriate, vacuum and steam heating pipes, plus any other additional detail that is called for. I always weather items of stock before they go into service, using the techniques outlined in 'The Art of Weathering' by Martin Welch (Wild Swan Publications) and other methods gleaned from the internet, especially from some of the weathering talents on RMWeb. Most OO rolling stock is not compensated. Most of my P4 stock is compensated by one method or another (either 3-point suspension or springing), although there are some scandalously uncompensated 16t mineral wagons in service.... Thus far I have not added any compensation to my P4 bogie parcels stock, but rather added waisted brass bearings to the R-T-R bogie frames and simply inserted the P4 wheelsets. In some cases, especially Bachmann Mk 1 bogies, you need to remove some thickness from the inner walls of the plastic bogies, but essentially it is a straight wheel swap. I will be trying some MJT and Bill Bedford bogie compensation/springing systems in due course.
The 005 loco 'Lucy' on the left is standing on a transporter wagon, which is scratchbuilt around a basic Ratio chassis. Narrow gauge rails are inset on the deck of the wagon. The 0-4-0 Peckett tank loco (scratchbuilt by Brian Clarke) is resting on a modified Hornby Lowmac, borrowed from Simon Castens. The wagons are shown in the sidings on Engine Wood. (Photo - Peco)

Standard B.R. brakevan constructed from the Airfix kit (now
Dapol). It has added detail including handrails and lamp irons and runs on
Maygib wheels, one set of which is compensated. Shown on the river bridge
on Engine Wood.

| This coach is an OO model, which was built from a Ratio Midland Suburban
kit in 1984. I decided at the time that it would look nice in GW colours
instead! (as if it was 'absorbed' from a small independent railway at the
Grouping....) It has some added detail (eg. GW lamp irons) and Ultrascale wheels. I was
originally going to run it on a GWR layout set in the 1930s until I got
more interested in the S&D. Still, there's always the odd railtour or
two on Engine Wood.........
During 2006 I decided to sell this coach, and advertised it on RMWeb. It eventually went to a new home in the USA, but it's new owner subsequently decided he didn't need it after all, and it has been sold on again and returned to Blighty, this time to the ownership of David Bickerton. It now runs on David's new layout 'Pudley Lane'. |
