The 005 Project No, not James Bond's apprentice, 005 is like 009, only narrower! 005 is 5mm gauge in 4mm scale - in other words representing 15" gauge prototypes. This was a joint project with friends Brian Clarke and Simon Castens. Most of the work was actually done back in the 1970s when we were still at school. Virtually everything had to be scratchbuilt, although in fairness, all of the locos and most of the other challenging work was done by Brian. Our interest was definitely in prototypes of a narrow gauge nature rather than 'miniature railways', although Brian later got interested in these as well. I have reproduced some of the photos that initially appeared in my article in the Railway Modeller in August 2000. I will add to this part of the page in due course.

16mm in the garden
From time to time I have joined in the 16mm in the garden fun with my friends Brian Clarke and Simon Castens, although it must be said that I have never quite achieved the same levels of enthusiasm as they have. Nevertheless, I managed to complete 'Daisy' in 1983 - a 16mm model of a narrow gauge Hudson Hunslet. Three years later in 1986 whilst on a canal holiday on the Brecon & Abergavenny canal with some friends, Simon persuaded me to start a 'canal holiday modelling project', so I built a 16mm brake van from balsa wood to go with 'Daisy'. I must say that most of this activity was undertaken whilst during the most appalling weather. When faced with the alternatives of steering our plastic 'mickey mouse' hire boat in a Force 8 gale and horizontal rain or building the brake van, I didn't take long to make up my mind!

'Jennifer' is another Mainline J72, which I couldn't resist buying secondhand at a show many years ago. For a while the original Mainline chassis ran quite well but this has now given up the ghost. I have recently bought a replacement Perseverence chassis and hope to get her running again soon. I have no idea where I will use here when I do get around to completing her, perhaps as a preserved loco on a Railtour or a visiting engine on the South Polden Light Railway.......(Photo - author) |
